Call for Artists: Storm Drain Mural Project

Deadline to Apply: May 9, 2025, at 5:00 PM

Tualatin Riverkeepers, Partners for Clean Water, and the City of Tualatin invite local artists to help transform a storm drain into a vibrant, educational mural. This project aims to raise awareness about how stormwater flows directly into the Tualatin River and its tributaries—critical waterways that support drinking water, wildlife habitat, and recreation.

We’re seeking designs that incorporate an environmental theme and celebrate Washington County's cultural diversity. The mural will serve as a multilingual reminder that what enters our storm drains goes straight into the river.

Artists selected for this project will receive:

- A $1,500 commission

- Opportunities to connect with local organizations

- A chance to mentor others through art and environmental advocacy

Timeline:

- Design submission deadline: Friday, May 9, 2025, by 5:00 PM

- Mural installation: June 2025

Design Specifications:

- Must include the phrase “Drains to Tualatin River” in English, Spanish, or Arabic

- Should feature an environmental theme

- Will be installed on a 4 ft x 10 ft sidewalk surface using latex paint and non-slip sealant (provided by TRK)

Artist Responsibilities:

- Submit a design proposal in PDF format by the deadline

- Prepare the mural site (location in Tualatin to be finalized)

- Collaborate with TRK and the City for installation in June 2025

- Be open to participating in a community education event post-installation

Selection Criteria:
- The City of Tualatin Arts Advisory Committee will evaluate proposals based on:

- Artistic strength

- Environmental message

- Representation of Washington County’s cultural diversity

Submission Guidelines:

- Up to 2 design proposals per artist, each in PDF format

- For each design, include whether it's rectangular or square

- Color palette

- A short description explaining how the design reflects cultural diversity and our connection to the river

- A brief artist statement or bio

- A statement confirming your availability to complete the mural in June 2025
